A warm welcome to our new Year 7 families

We want to wish you a very warm welcome to Heron Hall Academy. We look forward to your child starting with us in September.

This year our transitions days for the children will take place on 3 & 4 July. There will  also be a Transition evening for all parents on 2 July.

With our Headteacher, Mr Arthur Barzey, crowned as the UK’s Headteacher of the Year for 2023 in the top national teaching awards and a school that in 2021 was a Bronze Award winner for UK Secondary School of the Year, it is no surprise that Heron Hall Academy is becoming one of the most popular schools in the borough.

We have created  a series of Year 6 Transition information pages which we hope you will find helpful. There is also an email address to respond to all your queries [email protected].

Heron Hall is a place of love, respect and tolerance, a home away from home for your children, somewhere they will be safe and cared for. We are part of North Star Community Trust and based on the former Middlesex University site in Ponders End. As you walk into Heron Hall Academy, we believe you get a feeling of pride, of being somewhere everyone matters, where no one is left behind and where every single student can reach their full potential.  The magnificent building and facilities, added to the attitude and high aspirations of our staff, inspires our children to work hard and stretch themselves.

We pride ourselves in creating a family type culture at Heron Hall, making it a special place where staff and pupils genuinely care and support one another. Student wellbeing is at the forefront of what the school does every day. Students get lots of opportunities to share their thoughts and ideas in form time and each year group focuses on key areas of wellbeing in their studies. Our teachers take the time to talk to every student during the week and to offer any support they may need. This is especially important for an 11-year-old child starting in Secondary school.

The 7 things you need to know!

Here is some advice to help you with your first day at Heron Hall Academy.

1. School Bag: Your school bag should be large enough to hold your and pencil case and exercise books.

2. Equipment: Pencil case, black pens, green pens, pencils, ruler, calculator

3. Uniform: You should be in full uniform. It’s important you wear your uniform exactly as shown on our uniform section of the website.

4. Let us know: If you have any difficulty obtaining anything. We will always try to help. Just let your teacher know as soon as possible.

5. On The Day: You will meet your Form Tutor and your Tutor Group. Here you will be given your timetable and have the opportunity of getting to know each other. You will then begin your life at Heron Hall Academy.

6. Student Planner: On your first day, you will receive a planner. The Planner is a student’s most important piece of equipment. It will tell you where you are going, when your work is due, who you teachers are– everything! It is really important you use this to organise yourself and your work.

7. If you get lost: Ask someone to help you! Everyone at the school is helpful. Go to Student Reception there are always staff on duty who are only too willing to help you.

Reach out to your form tutor

Everyone at the school wants you to be happy and to do well. Please talk to your Form Tutor if you have a problem or you are worried about anything.

Dear families

We are delighted that you have chosen Heron Hall Academy for your secondary school and we excited for you to experience what school life is like here.

We recognise that the transition process in the final term can be a potentially anxious time for some Year 6 students and their parents. Therefore, we want to make sure that any anxiety is minimised, so your child feels eager and ready to join us in September.

Primary Schools visits in June

During the summer term will visit all year 6 students at their primary school. These visits allow our staff to meet students in person and liaise with the relevant primary staff in order to collect information which helps us when we create our teaching and tutor groups.

Transition days at Heron Hall Academy

These will be held on 3-4 July for students.

A transition evening for parents will be held on 2 July.

SEN students

For students with statements of special educational need or Education Health and Care plans and the SENDCO will attend Year 6 statement review meetings to begin to understand the needs of these students and plan their transition.

For students with high transition needs, the SENDCO will put in place a more personalised transition programme, in conjunction with the primary school, parents/carers and the school welfare team.
